Disney’s Vero Beach loves sea turtles and celebrates annual visits this time of year from mother’s looking to nest on its beaches.  This elegant, tranquil beachfront retreat is located just two hours southeast of Orlando on Florida’s Treasure Coast.  This relaxing Disney Vacation Club resort is settled on the shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean and close to the quaint downtown area of Vero Beach. Sea Turtle Nesting Season (March – October) is underway on Florida’s coastal beaches — and these ancient mariners need all the help they can get. Nearly 90% of sea turtle nesting in the U.S. occurs in Florida. From March through October these creatures will return to their home beaches to lay eggs.

        

This vast coastal area of the Treasure Coast is particularly important for sea turtle nesting. There are three species of endangered sea turtles found in the area: leatherback, green, and loggerhead turtles. Disney Vero Beach Resort is committed to conserving the sea turtles, so in the evening outdoor lights that illuminate the shoreline are dimmed so as not to confuse the newly hatched baby turtles as they head out to the safety of the sea.  Hatched babies are drawn to the light so keeping the populated area dark helps guide them towards the water. If you are a guest of the resort during this time, you may see the nesting sites and be lucky enough to see the baby turtles after hatching.  In summer months of June and July, the resort highlights the turtle activity with a guided “Sea Turtle Night Walk” available for DVC members starting at 9 pm on select nights.  This activity is by reservation only and dates fill up fast so book early!  Here’s the link for more information:

Delight the children with a Saturday morning Disney character breakfast at Wind & Waves Grill.  Poolside sandwiches meals-to-go and tasty snacks are available at Wind & Waves Market.  The Green Cabin Room offers a quiet place to enjoy a refreshing cocktail before and after dinner.  In the evening, Wind & Waves Grill serves dinner featuring fresh-caught seafood and locally sourced produce.
