Autumn is the perfect time to visit New Orleans. In October and November “The Big Easy” on the Mississippi gets some well-deserved relief from summertime crowds and extreme heat making fall travel enticing. Founded by the French and acquired by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase, NOLA is a fabulous blend of French, Spanish, African and American history and culture. Of course, the main reason visitors flock to the town is to partake in the annual Mardi Gras festivities, but there’s plenty of sightseeing, music, events and great food available to satisfy vacationers all year long in this walkable city. Here’s a short list of some of the best things to do while visiting the city of New Orleans:
Jackson Square – A fabulous place to take in local architecture, visit beautiful St Louis Cathedral, enjoy street performers, listen to music and see artists offering their latest creations. Located across from Café du Monde, home of the not-to-be missed and world-famous French pastries called beignets.
Royal Street – Stroll along one of the Crescent City’s oldest streets, dating back to French Colonial days. Here’s where you’ll find high-end art galleries, antique shops and charming restaurants serving up unique NOLA cuisine. There’s something to attract everyone along this classic street.
French Quarter – Eat, drink and be very merry! Walk along Bourbon Street, the most famous street in the town and center of the action during Mardi Gras. Enjoy music, entertainment, shopping, restaurants and of course plenty of drinking establishments. Collect colorful beaded necklaces as they are tossed from overhead balconies.
Garden District – For a more relaxed change of pace, spend an afternoon in this old-world-style neighborhood filled with classic 19th century antebellum mansions and lush landscaping. Take a tour of gothic Lafayette Cemetery No.1. Visit historic gravesites and crypts in of NOLA’s “Cities of the Dead”.
